From Sochi/Russia to Turkey ride 2017 info
hi ,I was checking with some agents/Agencies about the possibility for the Ferry Sochi to Trabzon /Turkey but I did not get an answer for a while.
Although riding through Georgia isn't that long and from old posts could be interesting as well .This will be in July2017.Any recent infos on this route riding overland and avoid the ferry?

doing some research ,seems crossing from Russia into Abkhazia could be a problem and require visa for most countries. Also read some safety issues at Abkhazia/Georgia unclear border situation.I believe could be safer/quicker this route, avoiding Abkhazia(?)

It is safe and Georgia is stunning.
You do not need a visa for Georgia and you can get one for Turkey online (if you require one- depending on passport).
If you arrive from Astrakhan we did this route on reverse via some funny shortcuts (to avoid the detour by Elista) through Nalchik, Vladikavkaz to the border point. It was fine.
There is only one border crossing with Georgia so it is a well established route and Georgia is very popular with Russian bikers.

Not possible to ride via Abkhazia and enter Georgia - only option is via Vladikavkaz and through Kazbegi and down to Tbilisi. Then two main roads heading west - the main highway via Khasuri and Kutasi or a more southern route via Tsalka and Paravani Lake and then depending on your bike, crossing via Akhaltsike to Batumi which is gravel or going back and via Borjomi to Khasuri and onward to Batumi. Depends on your time - the southern route is really pleasant and allows you to see the Vardzia cave city with good twisties for fun riding.

One suggestion - if you have time.
Head through Tbilisi towards Marneuli and at the village of Koda, turn right towards Tsalka, Paravani, Ninotsminda (be careful as there is more than 1 town called Ninotsminda in Georgia), the Akhalkalaki and Akhaltsikhe. You miss Borjomi but get some pretty amazing roads going this southern route. There is only one ugly stretch of road from Ninotsminda to Akhalkalaki (very broken pavement) - the rest is fun riding.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
