Quick question regarding vehicle documents throughout Central Asia/Mongolia/Russia

How many of you show good copies at the border? or do they insist on the original? I would rather hand over copies but how savvy are they?

The borders in West Africa were fine with good copies when I was there so I have my fingers crossed!

I may have problems with my trailer, that is all

I use a 2 sided colour copy of the v5 - laminated. Never had a problem

Just the first sheet of course. The sale or transfer section is completely irrelevant

Australian Rego docs are printed on plain white paper and there are no title docs as such - I no problems with it at any border in that part of the world.

Should have added. Does anybody use an ICMV? Or just your V5? I only ask because the V5 isn't interpreted but the ICMV is.

Any issues?

Nope - not for me (With Aussie Rego) and if IIRC none of Walter's crew that I crossed the border did either.

Edit: Oh and on this I think my IDP was a waste of time and money.

you dont need it, but they are handy and only cost 5 quid each.

Take a couple. A couple of IDPs and ICMVs are good insurance if you ever find yourself in a situation where you want to do a runner from the cops ... and they think you wont cause they have a copy of your IDP and ICMV.

The RAC will supply you with as many copies of each as you need.

Ok, well that's good. I think I may have run out of time for the ICMV but I picked up 2 IDPs in Bristol on Saturday and Lisa will get hers Tuesday. We leave on Saturday! I dont know how I forgot

Well, that used to be my thinking until I ran into a very feisty lady at the German registration office. You need to present your international registration to make any changes to your regular one. They have it on the computer and as far as they are concerned, it carries as much weight as the original, although it clearly states on the cover that it is only valid with the original. So, almost got myself in a pickle, but luckily eventually did find the international one. I've never officially had to use mine and don't bother anymore. It is just an extra cost.

Question western Mongolia (Tsagaanuur-Tashanta)
Hi,

I would like to try this border crossing next month from Russia to Mongolia.

Could anyone give info how could get to the Tashanta checkpoint by public transport from Barnaul ( I shall be starting from Novosibirsk ) and after the Mongolian immigration what public transport options are available to nearest township for trip arrangement and bus to UB.

I travel alone and has no vehicle.

Frankie, this is a vehicle based travel forum. I know its your first post, but to be honest we are unlikely to know about bus timetables here. We are more able to help if your question is "where is the nearest fuel station to the mongolian border along the M52" etc.

In terms of your question, I think if you ask around Barnaul, you want to try and find the "AvtoStanstiya" (Bus Station), where if you ask around in decent enough Russian, you can probably find a bus from Barnaul to Kosh Agach - or if not, get one to Gorno Altaisk and try from the bus station in Gorno Altaisk for Kosh Agach. Once in Kosh Agach, you could ask around and see if you can find a minibus from there to Olgiy in Mongolia.

When I crossed the border in 2012 there was a (Polish?) father/son pair hitchhiking. They were'nt allowed to cross until they had organised a lift through no-mans land (10km?). The car driver had to confirm he was "responsible" for the pair whilst in no mans land, before they were allowed to leave Russia. I'm not aware of any buses/taxis that shuttle between the 2 border posts.

Note: The border was closed on Sundays.

There is plenty of public transport from Barnaul. You can take a direct bus to Gorno Altaisk (as we did 2012 with bicycles) or take the train to Bijsk and then the bus. From Gorno Altaisk there exist busses further on, but Kosh Agatsh has only few connections (this is as far as public transport gets you), it is advaisable to stop in between, as Altai is really beautiful.
From Kosh Agatsh you will have to find a taxi or hitchhike to Tashanta. In Tashanta in the morning you may well be able to get a lift on a truck (border usually opens at 9).
