The age old china problem

I'm just in the process of getting quotes for the china crossing from Pakistan to Kyrgyzstan.

There is two of us doing the journey and so far the cheapest quote has been around $2600. from what i can tell this is quite good. But, we can't really afford it. we only have single entry visa's for Pakistan. so I'm thinking that we just leave Pakistan and try and get into china.

has anyone tried this?
i understand that it will still cost money but i was hoping not as much as it would if i take the tour option.

also does anyone know the websites where you actually find the information about all these permits, temp licenses and registration as i haven't been able to find anything

Some years ago, there were a few reports of making it coming from Kazakhstan. But not any more. Sorry, but that probably ain´t gonna work on the Karakoram Highway.

Why not go Pakistan to Iran to Turkey? Forget the media - if you can get visas, Iran is just great!

I went the other way a couple of years ago.
Forget about getting into China (with a bike) without a guide & arrangement. You won't get into the country. Then you have to go back to Pakistan .. without a visa.

Maybe you can try to find some more people to share the costs.

Good luck!

PS Iran is really nice, but Turkmenistan is an out-of-this-world experience, not to be missed (on par with N-Korea). Get a transit visa so you don't need a guide; should give you 5-6 days there.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
