Tyres/oil/petrol in Central Asia

I will travel to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.

I think I know the answer about the tyres but I am asking just in case: Is there any possibility to find them in any of those countries? The size is 3.10-21 (90/90/21) and 4.60-18 (120/80/18).

I ride an XR250 and I use 20W50 API SF oil for cars when I cannot find anything better. I read that it's available in the cities of some of those countries. Does that apply for all the above countries?

Is there any long route (more than 400 kms) without petrol? I have 700 kms autonomy, so it's ok but if you know any specific route where I must be careful, I'll appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ilias

Ilias,
I went to the Stans, and one thing for sure, it will be impossible to find 21'' tyres. They just don't have any bike with that size. 18'' my be possible, depending on the size, I'm not sure, but better carry some with you (major hassle, I know!).

Oil is available everywhere if you're not too picky about it (you shouldn't). After all, Urals (Russian bikes) use massive amount of it..

Petrol is generally not an issue if you're not too picky about the quality. In the most remote parts of Kirgizstan/Tajikistan you'll buy some on the road side, what they mix in is anyone's guess but the octane can get as low as 76, this added with the altitude will be your biggest worry .

For range, 700km will get you through all of the Stans easily, I guess the longest stretch would be in the Pamir Highway, maybe 500km.

Have fun!

Laurent

sorry for the wrong e-mail adr. got it corrected now. yes the only destination outside russia is Baku. and of course in turky (not Kurdi region) you'll no problem get tires if ordered beforehead.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
