Question Ulaan Bataar to Oelgi on Northern Route

Hello out there!

We are currently in Ulaan Bataar. We drove here from Oelgi following the 'Southern Route'. It was a very nice ride, with a couple of breakdowns, but no major problems.
We are looking into travelling back to Oelgi on the 'Northern Route'. We heard that it has been raining a lot in Mongolia this summer so we were wondering if this route is doeable this year. Has anyone done it latley and have some infos for us? This would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and happy trails

Northern Route

Hi

We near the Northern enterance to Mongolia in mid June and we met up with a couple riding into Mongolia on the heaviest BMW 1100 GS that you have ever seen. Note that attached photo. It was raining heavily at the time and we decided that it was too wet, however they went on. We met them a week later when we entering Mongolia, they were exiting. They managed and had more problems with sand, they did go down to the Gobe however, so if they could do it perhaps you could.

Noerthern Route UB - Oelgi

Thanks Ken for the picture!

We did end up doing the Northern Route too and I have to say I am very glad we did it. Compared to the South way around, it is a lot more scenic, there is nice valleys and lakes for camping and the tracks are a lot better up North, at least for bikes. Plenty of mountain passes and less of the corrugations that you find in the South.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
