Batteries are classified as hazardous cargo and can only be transported in special containers or in the devices they were designed for (eg phones). If you wonder why, look at videos of small phone batteries shorting and burning out and think what would happen if a big one did it in the baggage hold.
And that's without thinking what a leaky lead-acid one would do to an aircraft skin.
