Overland trailer build

Hi there, this is a bit of a project that myself and a friend are on with at the moment. It's my friends design currently residing in my garage. It's all hands on at the moment. Around a month and a half into the build a bit more labour intensive than I would of liked but let me know you thoughts on it.

And this is where currently at. Need to crack the whip and get it finished prior to trip to Morocco in April. Soon to come more doors and roof tent with awning.

Hope you are making sure , not going to be tail heavy , as the sankey can quite easily end up going that way , due short loading space forward.
The front , could do with angling down , or having a stone curtain rigging up , to stop ricocheting pebbles going thru the rear window of the tow vehicle , very common occurrence on bush tracks . HTSH

That's a good shout with the pebbles. Loading can be altered as and when but a valid point non the less. Hopefully gain the majority of the weight over the axles with roof tent mounting etc.

One of the most frequent things you see abandoned along side Ozie bush tracks are trailers..

Good suspension is the key .. along with rugged suspension components that don't break.

For the stone guard .. garden knitted shade cloth .. cheap. Hung between the vehicle and trailer - attached to the trail and loosely stretched ..

Good luck.. less is more.

I'm sure you're aware, but just in case you're not..

All trailer builds need an SVA in the UK now. Or it's illegal.

However, yours is an 'adaptation' , so might be okay. I'm not sure.

I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble without yet but worth knowing the implications.

Will look into it but as it's an addition to the trailer chassis I think should be ok. But valid point.

Thanks Warin. The suspension is defender shocks and leaf springs. The trailer originally had a gen set on it used by the army so shouldn't be an issue as its specced for well over a ton off road also.

Will look down to the garden centre for some knitted shade cloth. Hopefully have some time before we head off on the trip.

The chassis of the trailer doesn't look to have been modified, so original build date will apply , IVA (as its now) will not be needed, don't make the mistake of enquiring unless anonymously as the people who do the admin are not that well informed
and go to @*se covering mode and cause you unneeded expense etc .

I have seen some of these to, but none are built as well as a Sankey!

Good advise on less is more. A custom trailer build can quickly escalate to well over 1 ton if not kept in check.

Mine comes in at 700kg with the RTT and a heavy rack (soon to be replaced).

I would highly recommend extending the A frame by 300 or so mm to make towing, reversing and opening your rear door easier (assuming you are using a Defender/Disco?).

are you sticking with the nato hitch? they do bang about off road and put a lot of stain on your towbar and rear cross member

It was the plan yes. I will let you know how it goes. Looking at the NATO design it looks as if it's been optimised over millennia to be as un NVH friendly as possible!
