We chose an Iveco Daily for our overland trip from London to Africa because it satisfied the following criteria:
• 4x4 with high ground clearance
• Not computerised and therefore easier to fix if anything goes wrong
• sufficiently large for us to live and sleep inside
We bought our truck in October 2011, gutted the interior and spent 9 months preparing it for our overland trip.
Our truck features:
• 150 x 200 cm bed that is stored on the ceiling during the day and lowered with mattress and mosquito net already in place
• Fold out table and seating for 2 inside the truck
• Sink with tap and separate drinking water tap
• Waterproof Toilet / shower space
• Lots of storage space
• Lights and electrical power
The truck has been fully insulated with double layered silver bubble insulation and 3 cm yellow foam board. It has a pop up roof vent and 3 windows in the living space. There is a reinforced area on the roof for storage. Tools and spares are accessed via an external large locker.
Prior to departure in August 2012, we replaced the following items:
• gearbox
• alternator
• cambelt and bearings
• clutch
• main oil seal
• injectors
• exhaust
• brake discs and pads
• battery
• 4 x shock absorbers
We also fitted:
• rotating Recaro seats
• 7 x 12 volt electrical sockets
• 50 litre spare fuel tank fixed under truck
On our journey the truck ran very well with only minor repairs needed. Fuel consumption is 8 to 9 km per litre. We have changed all transfer oils every 20,000 km. We have changed the oil and diesel filters and replaced the oil every 10,000 km. The 4 wheel drive (low and high ratio gears) and rear differential lock are mechanically sound and were used on a weekly basis.
Since returning to the UK we've had our front torsion bar bushes replaced.
We are happy we chose the perfect vehicle for our journey and kitted it out with everything we could possibly need. This truck has many more years of life left in it!
