Leyland Roadrunner 2wd 6.5t travelling truck - 5.9l cummins engine

Hi all, I am selling my Leyland roadrunner truck as a result of this ridiculous low emissions zone in London. I know it is not what most would consider an overland vehicle but the definition is pretty dependant on what you want to do and where you want to go. This truck is 2wd and has no diff-locks but is a very robust truck with a very torquey engine and no electronic engine management. It is surprising how far you can get in a tough vehicle like this if you drive carefully and have decent tyres and for those who want to stick to tarmac and dirt tracks this will never fail you. Some of the roadrunners did have diff-locks on the back and so I am sure if you could get a back axle from a scrappy you could fit it easily enough.

I am looking for about £1500 but I am a reasonable guy and I'm doing a conversion on an LEZ exempt truck now so I am willing to swap if you have stuff I need. It is based in north London, UK at present.

This by no means a serious expedition vehicle like some of the land cruisers and army trucks on this website but it’s cheap, comfortable to live in and will get you far enough to have a great travel. At the end of the day the travelling is the most important thing and I brought is so that I could spend my cash on just that, not on a super specced vehicle.

It was originally built for BT as a workshop vehicle and pole transporter unit. Plated at 6.5t, although mechanically the truck is identical to the 7.5t version and so I expect that replating at 7.5t would be a paper exercise and would not need any work.

Comes with 6 months MOT and 6 months tax

I brought the truck a few months ago with the intention of converting it more completely to suit my purposes but as a result of the London low emissions zone I am selling it to avoid the charges. The truck is registered as a special vehicle on the V5 and so it would not be impossible to achieve showman’s exemption; I do not have time to do this.

When I brought the truck it had a double bed at the back which I removed in preparation for a rearrangement; all the wood removed is still in the back of the truck and so it would be a quick and easy job to refit the bed if necessary.

The truck has well under 100,000 miles on it and so mechanically it is faultless. The 6 litre B-series Cummins engine pulls like a train and seems to have more power than trucks twice its size; Cummins are used in plant equipment all over the world and so parts are a doddle. Since owning the vehicle I have driven to south of France with a full load and a 2ton generator and you could hardly tell it was pulling anything. I did a service on the truck when I brought it and so it has new oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and power-steering filter. Before I brought the truck it had had a more comprehensive renovation including some cab welding and a totally new clutch assembly.

Cosmetically the truck is certainly not perfect but there is nothing which could not be sorted with a bit of TLC. There is no serious rust anywhere on the chassis and so it will be fine for many more years. It went straight through the last MOT and I expect it will do a few more with no work needed

The truck would need the bed refitting to allow it to be a full-time camper but it has the following equipment which make it most of the way to being a great home:
sink with tap and foot pump
inverter
electric hook up and circuit breaker
12v lighting
240v lighting
3-way fridge (have only tested this on 240v)
leisure battery
battery isolator and changeover switch
2-way hob unit
external gas locker
Two tow bars
Side door
Wood burner
The truck makes a brilliant camper and travelling wagon but with a bit of work I can’t imagine why this wouldn’t get you on a serious overland trip. The chassis is identical to the Daf 45 and so sourcing parts is very easy.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
