La Solana/Yeste

For the weekend we headed south of Madrid to the village Modesto grew up in. La Solana is 200 km of highway driving, but it gives you access to tons of curvy mountain roads. The rest of the weekend was a loop into the mountains to the village of Yeste and back for 790 km.

First we stopped at his family home where he has a full motorcycle workshop. We needed to do oil changes on both bikes, install Daniel’s new front disks and brake pads, clean the air filters.

It is amazing here how you can be riding along and in the middle of nowhere there is a quaint village with a nice place for lunch or a nice small hotel. There were blooming almond trees everywhere.

We finally stopped after dark in Yeste and found a good room for 3 in the Hotel Yeste! We were glad of the extra electric heater provided as the temperature was near zero.

On Sunday we stopped for lunch in Hornos where there is a nice castle up on the hillside. I love it here when you order a drink you always get a snack with it!

Headed home we passed lots of small villages perched on hills and acres of olive trees.

Valencia

Poor Modesto had to work during the week so we took off to the east coast to Valencia for a few days. Straight there on the highway it 350 km, but we managed to go on the secondary roads for 388 km on the way there and 462 km on the way back.

The small roads offered a few scenic detours.

First we stopped for a traditional Spanish lunch of the menu del dia. This usually is massive. Today this included salad, paella with snails and chicken, squid and fries, , cake and coffee.

We also checked out the Cathedral, which is said to display THE cup from the last supper, the Holy Grail. You can climb up the 272 stairs for the 360-degree view of the city.

Valencia is famous for its oranges and Borjas of course, but also for the crazy Fallas festival. This is celebrated on Father’s day and involves a lot of fire works explosions and the burning of huge fantasy sculptures.

Riding home thru the mountains we past hundreds of acres of almond farms. Only in Europe would they have rock catchers like this. It was a chilly 5 degrees up at the top and there was still snow on the roadside.

Ladies on the road

This weekend we had separate guys and girls rides planned. Daniel had a guys ride to Palencia, but first Sara was off to ride with Alicia Sornosa for her “Ladies on the road Spain”event. Thanks to the other ladies for some of the photos.

The ladies met up in Madrid and then headed way off the main roads on one-lane tracks thru small pretty villages.
