Yes, it's true folks, I'm once more on the road (having been spotted by fellow HUBBers in various exotic locations) and I'm in the extremely enviable position of being paid for it! With the added bonus of the dream destination of Mount Everest Base Camp in Tibet.
It's fourteen years since I set off on my first bike trip and as I've crossed every continent since then, many of them twice, my experience is being put to the test in a job that I see as being a holiday rep with atitude riding a kick ass bike.
We set off at the end of April and we're currently in Tajikistan, there are three of us in the support team - two bikes and a mechanic in the van. Our group are great and are a veritable United Nations with riders from the States, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain and also the honeymooning Aussies!
As you can see, Thelma (my BMW R80GS) isn't coming along on this journey, as I've been given a company bike to ride, a 2009 1200GS nicknamed Beryl. I've also gone a bit bike-riding mad and I'm wearing proper motocross boots for the first time. What people don't realise is that they cunningly have platform soles, so that those of us who are a bit more vertically challenged aren't having to stretch quite so far to reach the ground.
It wasn't all sun on the first day
But it did brighten up
This journey is completey different in so many ways to how I usually travel - which is solo and with unlimited time. We're on a schedule and we're a group, although everyone rides their own ride each day, whether it's solo, in a pair or in a small group.
I'm like a Mother Hen, making sure that everyone is accounted for and arrives at each day's hotel safely.
