To share information.
In Northern Iraq - Kurdistan it is safe to drive, until you do not go south to Mosul and Kirkuk. I was 23-26.08.2018

Great news, thank you so much.

Could you please provide information where you crossed which border? How was the military responding to you as a (rare) tourist? From what I remember, border staff in Iraq is easy going whereas things become rough on the turkish side. Is that correct?

Hi Wwdent.

I entered the border crossing from Turkish Ibrahim Kalil Harbur on August 23th and went to the same border crossing on August 26th.
In Kurdistan was everything fine, in Turkey a little more questions from the military and the police, but everything was ok.
On return, I was kept at the border crossing for checking, 1h longer than usual. It is simply unusual for Europeans to go to this part of the world - this was an explanation.
Kurds, Turks and Iraqis are very friendly people.
You do not need to mention the word Kurdistan, to turkish army and the police, although it happened to me - I forgot and nothing went wrong

Hi Stefan,

Thank you for providing this update. I'm a New Zealander thinking of doing the same run this year. I do have a question for you about the bike.

Did the Iraq customs require any kind of Carnet for the bike when you entered or did they just check your registration papers and let you in?

Also did you have to purchase motorcycle Liability insurance at the border?

I'd be interested to know more details about he Iraq border crossing as far as the paperwork required.

Did you exit Iraq via the same border crossing?

Hi Clintonlogan

You dont need carnet for Iraq. they just checkd my registration papers and the serial number of motorcycle.

I paid 10$ for something like insurance.

Like every border you need passport for you and registration papers of your vehicle. Nothing specials.

I enterd and exit ont the same border crossing“Ibrahim Kalil Harbur”, From Turky to Iraq and back.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
