Alaska in March
Hi, I am planning a trip at the moment with a friend of mine, we are going to be doing the Pan-American Highway all the way to Argentina. At the moment though we are hesitating at the starting point for our trip.
We'd like to leave from Alaska to do the "true" trip all the way down (probably from Anchorage), but seeing as we are leaving in March we were wondering if anyone knew the road conditions around this period. We've read a bit and from what we gather it is more cold than "snowy" but seeing as we are both inexperienced riders we'd like to be safe and not have a crash in poor conditions if we can avoid it.
Another question was on the bike market in Alaska. We both want to buy our bikes "on site" then ride them down to Argentina rather than having bikes sent over by boat (we don't really have the money to do that). Is it easy and cheap to buy a second hand bike in Alaska?
Having said this, we could potentially hold the trip off for a while for better weather, what would be the ideal time in this case? We'd rather not do this though, only if we have to.
