Amur highway
Does anyone know the latest status of the Amur highway and what the fuel situation is along the route?

fuel is everywhere on it.

its all asphalt now except for about 500km. Might even be finished asphalting it by later this year

Hi - I did this from East to West in May 2008. Completely dry but well dusty, interspersed with regular roadworks along the way. By now I would think there is more tarmac along it than there was in 2008 - this is always the last stage in the construction of any road.

Fuel - roughly every 2-300KMs, but I would budget/carry fuel storage for every 3-400 KMs just in case.

How long would it take? Chita to Vladi. I'm trying to sort out my Russian Visa at the moment.

It's pretty close to 3,000K. In 2008 it took me a week on my Burgman but if Colebatch is correct, and there is < 500k of dirt, I reckon you could do it in 4 days easy.

Colebatch, I notice that on your trip you got from Japan via China. Is this an option for me also without great expense. Mongolia into China? That would be awesome but I thought you could only do it with an escort?? What are your thoughts?

Otherwise how long do you think it would take. Russia - Mongolia - Russia - Vladi on an F650? Can it be done in 29 days and still enjoyable?

Say:

Kazak - Russia - Mongol Border: 2 days

Mongol border - Ulan: 10 days?

2 days stop...

Chita: 2 days

Chita - Vladi & wait for ferry to Japan: 12 days?

Yes your time estimates are about right. Could do it a fair bit quicker is weather is on your side, but you have planned the right amount if time. Always best to plan conservative.

Most of the unpaved bit is to the west of the "hump". Once you are past Skovorodino there is probably only 50 km left unpaved and it was being prepped for paving late last year. After Magdagachi, its like a brand new runway. I reckon Chita - Vladivostok is about 4 days. Check TiffanysTravels to see how long Tiff did it in October last year. Similarly you can do Tashanta to UB in 4 days, but you do have to push it a bit. Planning 10 days is sensible.

As for China .... hmmm its still an escort job. I got real lucky back in 1994. I may be back in China this year but I will be with a guide if i do go back in.
