Asia Route outlines

I've just researched the Asia section for AMH7.
The map below outlines the possibilities and this article summaries it.
Could be handy for beginners who don't know where to start or what is possible.

china riding

Hi All,
I have been looking to research riding from the UK through China to Honk Kong. Then returning by air.
What I have found so far appears to be that China is still a bit of a no no as part as transit bikers are concerned
Got absolutely nothing from the consulate - as expected.
What is everyone else's experiences?
Ed

Consulates are the last place to ask - for any country.

It all here on the HUBB. Doable but very expensive and takes months (that part may change). Contact an agency like NAVO. No cheaper than joining an organised tour afaict - or make your own group via the HUBB. But I imagine most will go through to Laos, not HK.

That part of the world looks a lot more accessible than it did 20 years ago, thanks for posting.

Waiting for the book, please keep us posted. I am currently planning a world tour starting in Russia, shipping the bike to Japan or North Korea whichever is easier. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Chris, I checked out that link and it looks awesome.
I depart starting July 1, 2017. Seems like that is a very long time, but I have a great deal to learn and find a riding partner.
I can do it alone but it is so much better with someone else.
Know anyone?

I don't know anyone, Madeleine. But HUBB is a good place to ask.
Or, very often you meet a fellow rider on the road and ride with them as long as it suits you. But this cannot be predicted or planned for.

Thanks Chris, I've experienced connecting with other riders I've met on the road. It has been pleasant and a disappointing at times. My ride to Alaska this past summer alone was lovely because I met other riders was very selective. My ride to Central America was the same but one rider was very, very bad...... It is like rolling dice!! Hit or miss.

Merhaba,

As known,Turkey is the most southern bridge between europe and asia..
And its currently very hard to talk about possibilities of the southern gates until mideast problem is over which seems will last for many years.Same as in your book which contains all the current information on this area and rtw. trips and gives many tips..

I would like to add a few tips under this important thread..

1-There is 1 bordergate with Azerbaijan running regularly which doesnt seem on the map..You can take this passage for the caspian ferry or head down to İran also.No safety problem..

2-Two bordergates with georgia having 1 by the seaside..travellers coming from Turkey can enter Armenia only through Georgia..

3-Three gates with İran, currently most northern one is open 7/24 without any problems (Dogubeyazıt/Bazargan), the rest 2 are partly open according to the safety situations in the area.

4-Bordergate with Iraq is mostly open which you can take to travel only in north Iraq and then head to İran.No safety problem except 2-3 military operation days each time when starts..

5-Since many years, there are 2 train lines available between Iran and Turkey which takes motorbikes also.Tehran-Tebriz-Ankara once a week and Tebriz-Van twice a week..

All the best...

Thanks for added info Mehmet.

If you mean GR-AZ border arrows missing then you are right.
It gets a bit tight in there but I have corrected my master map.

There is a very small area on the map for the bordergate between turkey and azerbaijan (seems like a nose) where I couldnt see the arrow besides georgia/armenia, armenia/iran and georgia/az. gate arrows.
(may be getting old here because of less travelling now!!!)

Travellers usually prefer turkey, georgia, iran passage for natural beauties and adventure riding (even no great historical places or nice beaches) while heading to pakistan-india..

I know all these bordergates clearly (except georgia/az. one.)since many years which are always open without any problem for international vehicle passes except war periods.

Best Wishes.

Oh, you mean to the narrow link to Nakhchivan AZ enclave.

Must say I never even saw that one as I assumed this is where it all starts to get complicated if coming from the west so it's easier to keep it simple for as long as possible and go TK-GE-AZ then wherever, as no visa for GE - rather than Nakhchivan-AR-AZ (or a quiet way from Nav into Iran) as it's an extra visa for AR for most, and afaik AZ applies the annoying 3-5 day bike transit, unless you pay full price for the bike import.
Maybe in Nakhchivan it's different.
