Austria Trip

Hi
I am planning to drive from Inverness to Austria some time this year in good weather. I understand the ferry is from Newcastle to Amsterdam. I would be grateful for any information.

Please post your suggestion on best roads, tips etc...

Thanks

Badrakumar

PS: I had wonderful experience with the information provided by the members of this forum for my Norway Trip last year. Thx

Hello, where do you want to go in Austria, into the Alps or some other places?

If you want to do the way through Germany in a quick way you can use de DB-Autozug from Düsseldorf to Munich, while you sleep in the train you do about 800 KM

A good site for the Alps in Tyrol go to Traveling in the European Alps. Alps pass roads in Switzerland, Austria, Italy and France.

I looked at the website. It is useful.
I am planning to do it next year around June. Is that a good time for Austria?

I travelled from the UK to the Austrian Tyrol in June this year - it was great and a good time to go. Any earlier and you may struggle with snow in the Alps.

I crossed via the Eurotunnel. Given unlimited time my preferred route down would be to go via the Vosges in France and then head east, but I have also enjoyed going down the western border of Germany too on other trips.

I am new here so not sure of the etiquette of posting links to other forums (so apologies if this treads on toes, please put me straight) but I got some good advice from an Austrian local before my trip

I'm riding to Austria this week (4th Sept). I am getting the overnight ferry from Newcastle to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam). The ferry departs at 5pm, arriving at 9:30am the following morning. Cost of the ferry and cabin (for one person) was £323. This is expensive but the alternative is the long motorway thrash to the channel tunnel and across northern France. It would have meant an additional 750 very boring motorway miles, two nights accommodation and the cost of the channel tunnel crossing. I work 1 mile from the Newcastle ferry and I am self employed. For me, catching the 5pm ferry means I can squeeze an additional day's work in before departure (time is money!). The economics of using the ferry make sense in my circumstances.

I am then doing about 360 motorway miles to Baden Baden in Germany. From there the good riding starts with a 100 miles of the B500 in the Black Forest, then across the German Alpine Road ( German Alpine Road - Home ) en-route to Gasthoff Hochalmspitz ( Gasthof Hochalmspitze · Gasthof Hochalmspitze is an English owned, family-run hotel located in Maltatal, Austria. We provide hotel accomodation to visitors of undiscovered Austria, in the province of Carinthia ) in Austria which caters very well for bikers.

That's my plan - I hope it helps you!
