Best route Magadan to St Petersburg
It's over 10k kms. Is it possible to make it across Russia on a single entry 30 tourist visa?
Or do people get double entry russia visa drop into Mongolia cross Kazahkstan, and Ukraine then back into Russia?

Doing a little more research, I found as a US citizen I can get a 90 day tourist visa for Russia.
Mongolia no visa required, Kazahkstan is something else, they have a bunch of wierdo visa requirements... they want to see your bank accounts and make your children vampires.
Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania are all very hospitable issuing 90 day visa on entry for most western countries.
Belarus is an interesting exception, they extort $160 for a multiple entry tourist visa valid for three years. Is Belarus worth visting?
I know Argentina jams ya for $160usd too, but that one is good for 10 years. Brazil does the same I hear.

We have scheduled 28 days to drive from the Ukraine border to Ulan Ude (Lake Baikal), after which we drop down into Mongolia and begin heading back west.
It seems to me that 30 days would be very tight to go all the way from Magadan to St. Pete and would require some long days of driving/riding.

As usual, the answer depends on lots of things--you want to just get through the place, or have the ability to stay someplace a few days if you like it?
Why not just get a multiple-entry and be done with it? If you a breakdown, or plan to go to Mongolia and come back to Russia, etc. you'll be glad you did.

Visa requirements tend to be largely reciprocal, how easy do you think it is for someone from Kaz. to visit the good old US of A?? Or Belarus for that matter?
Other countries like Ukraine simply are desperate for your tourist dollar on the one hand and hope to make it easier for their citizens to travel to your country. Blame your own government, before you blame someone else!
You can get a 5 year multiple entry visa for Russia as a yank quite easily, be thankful for that.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
