Bike Hire in New Zealand
We are thinking about a trip to New Zealand (Feb 09) South Island. Thre are lots of rental companies to pick from. We are looking for recent information from people who have hired recently - ie condition of bikes, information provided, all the information one would look for when you hire a bike, etc etc etc.
It is a long way to go, not to get what you are looking for, I have hired in the past in Canada and Spain and have had great service etc.
Thanks
Tourman

Bike Hire in NZ
Tourman
I hired a F650GS from Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours (not sure about spelling!) in Feb 08 for about 15 days. Their website is at New Zealand Motorcycle Tours, Rentals and Hire NZ - Rental Motorbikes
They have depots in Auckland and Christchurch so I was able to do a one way trip from Auckland to Christchurch for a small additional fee.
Everything was absolutely fine. I communicated with them by e-mail before I left and there were no problems in booking the bike. I think they offer a reasonable selection and their rates were about par for the course. The bike was in good clean condition and I had no problems with it.
I didn't really need any info from them as I'd already sorted out my route and accommodation, but I reckon they would give you help/advice if you needed it.
It was the second bike trip I've done in NZ and I would absolutely recommend it. So much stunning scenery...........
Hope this is of use.

I'd second that
I have had dealings with Te Waipounamu Motorcycle Tours, both getting bikes sorted for friends and I bought a bike that had recently been one of theirs. The maintainance on it was very good, and it went on to go from 70,000km when I bought it, to 150,000km when I sold it to a friend. It's still running well ('94 F650 Funduro). There are other hire companies, and I have not heard bad about any really.
Plus the owner lent Ted Simon a bike to use while his one was held up in the USA with a shipping strike.
Regards
Nigel in NZ

Thanks Frodo, lots of good information and pics, just might do some of the roads you did. Is Feb the best month to visit South Island from a warm weather weather point of view, some say it is ?

Hey Tourman,
Nigel Marx should have mentioned, he is arranging the NZ HU meeting in February (20,21,and 22)
check out his thread, under Regional Australia / New Zealand,
you should come, February probably the best time to come, weather-wise.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
