Update about the crossing at Salele: we got across to Indonesia, so it's doable and I expect it to become easier later on.
By the look of it it was a pretty small, low traffic border crossing (we haven't met anyone else, apart from a few locals walking across). The guards/customs were really friendly and helpful, including drag racing us across the border to Indonesia on their small bikes
The crossing only took about an hour, including waiting for one of the customs guys. They didn't have much clue (on either side) about the Carnet, so took a bit of explanation, at the end we almost just told them to stamp here and sign there, which they did.
There is a large complex already built but not in function yet, so I reckon in a few months it will be a major crossing like Motaain. For now, I would recommend it over Motaain, especially that the South side of the island is not too frequently visited by bike riders and there are a few nice gems down that way.
The roads in the area is a mixed bag: if you got to Suai on the South coast road, you'll be pleasantly surprised about the Timorese side of the border, no traffic means better roads after the bombed out tar further East. The Indonesian side is better, but if you want to head North from Betun, be prepared for some offroad sections with relatively steep climbs (no problem on our lightly loaded bikes) and crossing a 30m foot bridge.
cheers,
Andras
