Buying and selling bikes in the Middle East
Hi, my friend and I are planning on doing a trip through the Middle East - starting in Aleppo, Syria and travelling from there through Lebanon, Jordan and then Israel last to avoid visa issues. This is our first trip on motorbikes so we are uncertain of many aspects..

We intend to buy bikes out there and then sell them on before we leave - is this possible? And if so, what are the rules regarding carnets if it is not a GB registered vehicle? Insurance I know you can buy at the border for all of . those countries so that is not a problem. The problem is, does everyone (or anyone) allow a bike through that you've bought whilst out there, eg. if I bought a bike in Syria, would I be able to take it through the border into Lebanon? Or if not, is it possible to sell on the bike and then buy another in each country - is that feasible or would we just end up losing tons of money?

Furthermore, do you need an International Driving Licence or would a standard licence suffice for those countries?

I am not up an all things Mid East or the carnet but the carnet dose not care where the bike is from only that you sold the bike and will pay the contrey that you sold the bike the money. So yes you can sell the bikes but it will nick you.

Buying and selling a new bikes at every stop will end up hurting you, the drop in price and your need to get ride of it fast and I do not if you can.

You may want to look at the price of the carnet and flying the bike back to GB or riding it there. May be about the same but if I remember Israel is going to pricey maybe it was Egypt.

A International Driving Licence is just your Driving Licence in other languages some cops may want one others do not care. I get one and only give it to them if they ask for it.

just came accross your post now.

i am not sure by 100% but there isnt much change for your idea. In the countries i know, Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the main difficulty is the registration. Only with residence visa and, subsequent local driving license you can register a bike.
In Syria i dont expect many (if any) bike dealers. Jordan doesnt allow motorbikes at all locally (you can pass with a carnet if the bike is registered abroad). The law's are quite similar in ME Countries and i expect the same rules in your mentioned route.

Otherwise i agree with Dlbiten, that Carnet only matters for the country where its issued. As well the losses you would have of bying and selling the bike in the different countires.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
