By Car from Germany via Russia to Vietnam and beyond
I've lived in Asia over the past 20 years (Thailand/Laos/Vietnam/Cambodia). I guess what I am saying is that I am well travelled and not looking for novice travel recommendations but rather some pointers into the right direction for my route planning (red tape, war zones, borders, police etc).
My Routes
Route 1: Germany-Ukraine-Russia-Russian Siberia-Russia Far East-China-Vietnam
Route 2: Germany-Turkey-Armenia-Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan-China-Vietnam
Route 3: Germany-Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India-Bangladesh-Myanmar-Laos-Vietnam
Any ideas are welcome. I am open to any route but in fact would prefer to go the norther route (Route 1)

#1 China requires guide, temp license & temp plate. it can be pricey, much lower with a group.
#2 no open border between Turkey & Armenia (go thru georgia), no open border between armenia & azerbaijan (go thru georgia). i think the azeri visa is fairly restrictive & then you have to deal with the ferry. alternatively you can go from georgia up into russia then across Kaz. its longer.
#3 iran, pak, india, bangladesh all require carnet. bangladesh was rumored to be requiring some crazy extra deposit. pakistan has lots of police escorts & requires some patience. myanmar is still not possible to cross as far as i know. recently a couple of big bikes made it in for a loop but traversing wasn't permitted. who knows it may change soon...
some people might be organizing groups to go across china from kyrgyzstan to laos...or another route. good luck

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
