CDP advice

HI, I need your thoughts on this, I am currently at home in New Zealand and planning to continue my RWT trip, My bike is currently in storage in Croatia (thanks Dooby) and it`s CDP is going to expire in less than a month, It has not been used since I left NZ but I will need it for my ongoing journey. I have applied to the NZAA who issued it but they have informed me that it must be renewed in the country where the bike is, can this be done and if so, by who?

Well the CDP issuing authority for Croatia is listed here: https://carnetdepassage.org/country/croatia/

But I think the NZAA might have meant that you need to do/extend a Temporary Import Permit in Croatia. It's a bit unlikely that the Croatian Auto Club would want to take over an NZ-issued CDP.

How long has it been since the bike's entered Croatia?

CDP Advice

It`s been there for seven months but the CDP wasn`t used to enter Croatia and wasn`t used leaving NZ or anywhere else on the trip. I will try the NZAA again but I may just have to get a new one

Don't get a new CDP at all unless you plan to continue on to a country that you know absolutely, positively requires a CDP to enter.

You don't need a CDP for any of the Western or Central European countries. If I understand your posts above correctly, at present you have no obligations incurred on your existing CDP to remove the bike from any country... so just wrap the process up, get your deposit (if any) back, and relieve yourself from any obligations to the organization that issued the CDP.

I'm no expert on what countries you visit in the future might demand a CDP to enter, but I don't think you will encounter any future need for a CDP until you get well into the Middle East. You sure as heck don't need one for Europe.

On a Round the World trip there will be places where a CdP is required; furthermore, it is simpler to use than a TIP in many countries.

If you have one and need one life is simple, if you don;t have one and need one things become difficult. I'd get a CdP.

I don't know how NZ manages this however we've always had to get a new one after the first one expires.

Indeed, I have just applied and paid for one today (in Germany but I am Irish and have an Irish bike), and it says clearly in all the paperwork, that it lasts for a year but can be renewed if necessary. So the renewing bit would seem to be in NZ. I guess there would be a fee to renew which I imagine is probably the same fee paid the first time round so in the end I guess he could get the refund then ask for a new CDP but it does seem a bit OTT.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
