China
Hi All
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have to start somewhere. Want to do a ride next year (this year riden around Morocco and got two other trips planned) and have always wanted to ride through China. Is it pos and what do I need to do in the way of paperwork?
If this is not an option anyone know if you can ride through Korea?
Thanks
Pete

My dear chap, surely Biggles would ride a Triumph? Should your HUBB I.D. not be BMWvonstalhien?
Sorry for going off-topic, couldn't resist!

From what I understand, China is virtually impossible to enter with your own bike, even with the proverbial bribe, although I think you can enter with your own bike if you hire an authorized guide. There are tours set up to ride, but no official bike rentals.
Apparently, you can buy a Chinese bike if you have someone who lives there (a citizen) register the bike in their name, but the licensing is murky.
Go to MyChinaMoto.com - Chinese Motorcycle Community and Resources which is a Chinese-manufactured bike enthusiast site, but there are several members who are ex-pats of various countries living and working in China who could probably help you out as far as setting you up with a bike.
I do think you are out of luck getting your own bike into China, unless you spend a heap of cash to do so.

Thanks for the reply. Been reading up on it and it looks like you just have to take a chance and see if you can get in with a bike. Licences and insurance seem problems as well.
Think I might look at this another way and see where I can fly my bike to, so I can have a months ride without having to ride from the UK. Any suggestions would be nice.

I can suggest that you contact Gareth or Jo Morgan. They rode the Silk Route into China back a few years. They would be in a position to tell you what it took to get their BMW's into China. I don't know if they had to get a guide along with the group of 5 riders. You can contact them through their web site www.worldbybike.com .
Cheers

See the Northern Asia forum for Korea
Not a problem if your country is a party to the 1949 Convention on International Road Traffic (as opposed to the 1968 convention)
and the Southern Asia forum for China
You need a guide and couple months of advance planning.
These topics are covered heavily in the respective regional forums.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
