Crossing from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia possible??
Hi there, I'm on my way up to Ethiopia after 9 months touring Africa on my gs. I need to get back to Europe next year but I'm traveling without a carnet which makes Egypt a no go. I was wondering if there is a ferry between Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia and also if they allow foreign vehicles entering the country.I travel with a US passport and Argentinian as well. Any input will be greatly appreciated.Cheers

A number of us are wondering about alternatives to Egypt these days so please post what you find out. Sorry I have no knowledge on this to offer.

good question, I understand why anyone would want to avoid Egypt, I don't plan on returning, but if I could find another way to get my bike to Ethiopia I would be interested in returning there! Ethiopia being landlocked adds to the problem. I do know there is a ferry from Yemen to Djibouti though.. French nationals can get a Djibouti visa on entry, doubtful for other nationals though. Also, Cairo is a good place to get an Ethiopian visa, not sure if you can get one in Arabia..

Ferry from Suakin in Sudan to Jeddah is worth investigating. There are some old threads here on this.

It's close to impossible to get the visa for Saudi when traveling with a bike.
Maybe the time has come to go west from Sudan and continue via the good old Lake Chad route?
