Hi
I completely agree with Chris. We did that trip last year and we hat no problem with safety. We went through Morocco -> Mauritania -> Mali-> Burkina -> Togo -> Benin -> Niger -> Chad -> Cameroon -> Gabon -> Congo -> Angola -> Namibia -> Botswana -> Zambia -> Malawi -> Mozambique -> South Africa ... in 7 month, 2 people with a Toyota HZJ78.
From Morocco to Namibia : 5 month.
It was really a great experience specially for the West Africa where french is spoken (we are french !)
Angola is one of our best memories. You can see all the details on our website (in french): http://www.kapsud.net
In Angola, we met other travellers with land-rover (english and american ones) and they were very happy to follow the West Route.
You can see their website (in english) :

And other friends (swiss and french) with a Pinzgauer

You can ask me more details if you want
Ciao

Why not consider the west route Cameroon to Angola etc - plenty to get your teeth into there from what I hear.
