Dublin to Dakar

Hi.

I'm looking at bringing a party of up to 100 bikers from Dublin to Dakar, supporting a Dakar competitor who will be raising money for a Children's Hospital.

I know very little about West Africa, can you tell me if this is feasable, are the roads of good quality, is theres a security risk? Any info would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Eoin

Hi Eoin,

I plan to do the trip Dublin /Dakar in 2008 the information I gathered to be confirmed by more experienced rider is that the atlantic road in Morocco and Mauritania is almost sealed and straight forward, The border Morocco/ Mauritania in western Sahara is dangerous due to land mine and only if you don't stick to the track There are good piste in Mauritania, and Senegal so anyone with a bit of planning and organisation should be able to do it.
I found those info in "Sahara Overland "and "Adventure Motorcylcing " books from Chris Scott
Should you need any hel phere in Dublin I would be happy top help

Cheers

gwel

Smile to dakar

hi eoin,

huu, this sounds like a huge plan and you sound brave doing this without any knowledge of west africa.

but as gwel said, it is not that difficult because most of the roads are good.

I write to you, because I will take a group of friends down as well, five bikes, starting 26.12.2007 in Malaga. And I have some expierience in west africa, I have come up thru Africa this way in 2004/2005.

Of course I will help you, so email me directly please with your questions

Thanks a million for the info lads, it will be really usefull.

I'll not be going untill 2011, when our mate competes, so I 'll have loads of time to prepare the route.

I'll be popping off an e-mail to the 2 of you shortly

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
