East Timor into Indonesia
I'm planning to travel West from East Timor into Indonesia with my bike. I've read plenty of threads about people going the other way, but has anyone done gone East to West recently? I'm going in a couple of months, shipping from Darwin.
Thanks

Hi Skidder, when are you going? I was planning the same thing but have since decided to ship from Darwin to Malaysia, for various reason. See here http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...singapore-2325 Probably better for you being a Brit. I'll be leaving Brisbane for Darwin mid July and still looking into the shipping bit. Before I changed my mind I had contacted the Indonesian consulate in Sydney and they said I would need to get in touch with their consulate in Canberra to get a police letter which would make travelling easier. Also they could notify the areas that I would be passing through. Timor seemed the easy part from emails I recieved from the tourism section, basically just turn up with a carnet. Must admit the recent problems there with the army has confirmed my choice to skip it for now and go to Malaysia first.

Thanks Guys!
I've emailed the German folks and I think I'd already read the Hubb link. My worry is the customs/imigration at the East Timor/Indo border.
I'm going in a couple of months. My bike is Australian although I'm a pom so I might encounter the same anti Oz problems, but i've just had three weeks in Bali and Lombok (no bike though) and it's given me heaps of confidence for those parts.

Struggling to email the one link, and the more I read the more I think it looks OK. I'm going to give it a crack, depending on how often Timor makes the news of course......

we found the customs from East Timor to Indonesia (land crossing) to be the easy bit. They wanted to go through all our things but no real dramas with the crossing on either side. We found East Timor to be quite expensive (Oct 2004) but perhaps if all the United Nations people have left then the prices will drop a bit. The air fare from Darwin to Dilli was also very overpriced at that time so check it out as well. Once again that may have dropped as well.

Riots and gang warfare in Dilli, Volcanoes and earthquakes in Indonesia. Glad I listened to advice and will be shipping to Malaysia instead, Thanks especially to David and Sheryl Laing. 5 weeks to go but not counting the days - much.
Skidder, hope you've been watching the news mate
Steve

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
