FERRY FROM EGYPT TO ITALY
Can I get a ferry from Egypt direct to Italy? I don't have time to go via Greece, Cyprus etc.

In summer 2002 I travelled all around the Med (from Tunis to Italy, across Lybia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Greece) just because there was no ferry connection between Egypt and any other country (except to Jordan).
The only chance is a cargo ferry. You can try it at the following URL:
http://www.grimaldi-freightercruises.com/
However, last year I talked to them, and they told me that the service is not regular and they prefer not shipping people.

Hello pietro.spera and TONY HAYDEN !!
This is my second thread and im not sure if i can do this.. but when looking how to travel from Europe to Egypt by land or water I found out this Thread, (although it a bit old) and i´d like to take the chance to ask you a couple of things. i was wondering if you guys could tell me the cheapest way to go from Italy to Egypt by boat.
Also I'd like to ask you pietro.spera how did you manage to travel around the north african countries? I was inicially planning to go from Spain and Morocco to Egypt by bus... but i've heard it is very difficult for a European to get through Algeria and Libya... How could I manage to see the countries between Morocco and Egypt?
Thanks for your time

As for the ferry connection Italy-Egypt, take a look at the GRIMALDI web site.
As for the trip across North African countries:
- Algeria is dangerous for indipendente travellers, especially along the Coast;
- Lybia is difficult for bureaucratic reasons. You need visa in advance and it's very likely they want you to have a guide escort with you for the entire trip. But you should check with the embassy, since the rules change all the time;
- In Egypt (always), most of the time in Lybia and normally in Syria you need the Carnet de Passage. If you don't know what it is, just google it and study a bit;
- No problems in the rest of the Mediterranean states.
Best,
P

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
