From Iran to South Africa

Hello Dear all,

I just arrived to iran after 5 months riding in central Asia. Because of some circumstances my plan changed and at the moment i am searching for some possibilities how to ride my motorbike to South Africa.
I do not have any visa at the momment for all those countries, so i will do some research where and how to get them...if any advice please let me know.

First challenge, how to get to Africa?
Dubay - Ethiopia by plane? Maybe some other options... ??
Tehran - Ethiopia ??

By boat??

Plan would be something like that
Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zinbabwe, South Africa

In the next days i will try to get more infos...but any advice would be more than welcomed.

I was not preparing my self for Africa at all, but now i see a good opportunity to do that part of the world as well, before i go back home to Europe...

So any advice...

Regards,

Bostjan

Oman to Djibouti

Hi Bostjan

My name is Marcel, Swiss. In 2012 I was in the same situation as you are. First of all: enjoy Iran! From Bandar Abbas there is a ferry over the golf of Hormus to Sharaja. There at the border be patience. Once in Dubai make a contact to "Dubai355". Saleh is a very nice man and helpful. He's raiding a Honda. Please give him a big kiss!!
In 2012 i took the airplan to Addis Abeba. It was quiet expensiv. In Addis I weastet six days to get my bike out of Cargo.
So the idea is: ride to Salalah, south Oman. There take a small boat to Djibouti. Make save Saleh will phone with the capitain of the boat! There are boats they transport sheep and goats from Africa to Oman.
As a Swiss I only get a visa in Dubai for Malawi. Visas in Dubai are very expensiv! It's weastet time. All the others you can do on your entry.
If you can read German I'll send my travel diary.

Nice trip!

This wooden boots " Daughs" are small. But the Omanis cross the See with its. So I don't have a contact. You have to go to the harbor or to the sailors tea house to ask for crossings. It will be a nice adventure! Make save Saleh or an other Arab person will know which boot you enter!
Pls send a PN with your mail adress. I'll send you my travel notes.
Take your time in Iran. People are wonderful. Yast is a inteessting town.

Marcel

Ok...interesting

Now i am searching for a solution how to obtain the Djibouti Visa and the customs things for the motorbike.
Maybe i can leave my motorbike on the boat and go back to Muscat and fly to Djibouti (200-300Eur flight) where i can get the Visa on Arival... and wait for the boat in the harbour...hm, quite an adventure indeed And then the customs...?

Thank you once again and i will post here some news about this topic...for some new potential travelers

I will send you my adress whe i can...now forum doesn`t allow me...

..so i went to Salala and check all the options with the port staff and some captains.

At the moment there are no small boats from Oman to Djibouti, there are just from Salala to Somalia to Bosao and Berbera.

From Salala to Djibouti is just a big cargo ferry which goes just now and then.

So i`ve decided to finish my trip after 7 months on the road, yes i am happy

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
