Has anybody driven through North Africa recently.

Hello all i'm new to this site just looking for advice has anybody driven through North Africa in recently years. A few years back i drove from London to Mongolia in a banger and now i wanna do a similar thing maybe from London to Cameroon. Of course i have read some things from the foreign office and counter terrorism unit saying certain countries they don't advise people to travel because of a spate of kidnappings etc. At times they can go overboard main countries they mention are Algeria-Mauritania-Mali is there any safe places to cross or far too risky? Cheers.

Welcome to the HU, A look through the search will lead you to many threads about North Africa and beyond, and I am sure many people will respond to your request.
What country are you from, and what mode(s) of transport do you use?

West Africa

Hi, am on my way to SA on motorbike. Now in Mali, so far everything should be do-able on a little banger (Maybe even to much good tar). There are regular rally's with bangers from Europe to this area. Also met a couple along the way. You might get stuck once or twice depending on your route. The main route across west Africa at the moment is the Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauri, (Senegal), Mali one.

Trans Sahara Routes

You may find this page useful:
Sahara Overland ~ Trans Sahara Routes

Currently Morocco - Mauritania - Mali is no problem, as long as you stick to the safe areas. To know that, there is country-specific info here: Sahara Overland ~ Country Information (click the map)

Many who travel locally think the FCO map for Mali is a little OTT.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
