Heading South from Denver. Where does the pavement end?

First time Poster, long time lurker here. Decided to check out of the 9-5 grind and rules and check in to the rules of the road for as long as 30k will take me. I am hopeful it will hold me at least 6 mths, especially given I am heading South.
There is an abundant amount of info here on this incredible site however I have just one question for now if you all dont mind indulging me...
Where does the pavement end heading into South America? I understand that I will need to ship the bike from Panama to Quito over the Gap, but once in Quito, how far south can I take the pavement? I am on a heavy street bike so I cant be doing any off road riding.
Thank you for your help!

Thumbs up welcome to the hubb

hello,

very good decision to ride South, you will not regret it.

even if you dont learn a little bit of the Spanish language your 30k USD should take you to Argentina.

where does the pavement ends? I would have said Panama, but you know about the Darien Gap. Than I would say, just before you get to Tierra del Fuego you will have longer stretches of gravel on the Ruta 3.

Enjoy your ride. Soon you will find out that six month is not enough time and 30k USD can also take you back up on the road if you live a little bit resourceful.

greetings

mika

Hey Mika,
30k will bring a long way down South. I am head to TDF November 1st and am only going to bring 10k for a whole year or longer. I will also be leaving from Denver when are you planning on taking off. If you need any infromation on gear bike upgrades any of that let me know, I hit the road soon!

Thanks for responding Mika and Cruthas!

I will be leaving when a good window of dry weather appears during the first two weeks of January. This past January, on a ride through Baja and the Mainland, I was able to ride out of Denver on January 12th.

I go back and forth about taking the HD Street Glide, but being originally from Milwaukee and all, I just think it would be a hoot. So am going to go for it! I still need to check into shipping the beast from Panama to Quito though, not sure I want to be taking off the batwing to crate it up...

Cruthas: what are you riding and what's your route?

Remember winter is reversed in SA. Going to TDF you will freeze your ass off. 30k should take you a lot further than 6 months ($166/day). Would make a nice easy year for me.

Don't end up in the "wishIhadda club" by missing Colombia, you'll love it! Friendly people and
a beautiful country. With that said, get you a copy of Footprints or Lonely Planet and look
for Hostels to stay in, they can save you a lot of money $$. When heading to TDF you'll
hit about 75 miles of dirt crossing the last part of Chile, but the road is mostly hard packed,
you should be ok.

Hey Dreamcatcher,
I am riding a 04 KLR 650 and I dont really have a route. I am just going anywhere the road brings me. I am leaving in less then 2 weeks cant wait. Do you have a website going or anything to keep in touch with other while you are on the road blog of some sort? Let me know maybe we can meet up and ride together for a bit. Good Luck!
