For that area, the Camargue is worth a look also; flat, salt marsh coastal country but renowned for the wild, white horses that run free there.

I agree; it is not something that one should constantly worry about and spoil a trip as a result.
But, being prepared and staying aware of such possibilities is a good approach - these scum are looking for those who have relaxed and are easy pickings compared with those who make themselves more difficult targets.
On any decent campsite you should be OK; look for those who have security/checkin at the entrance and, probably, a secured entrance "after hours".
With hotels, I have parked a bike right in the entrance way and partly blocking access on foot, as per the instructions of the check in staff; that was in a town centre (broke my rule about staying out of them!) and the staff wanted to help me secure the bike.
