India on my own bike
Hi
I have rented Royal Enfield in India but would love to ride my own motorcycle throughout India.
Therefore need information on import and export as well as insurance.
- Is Carnet required, Indian or international?
- Approximate cost of import by air?
- Approximate cost of export by air?
- Can motorcycle be left for continued travel next year?
- Approximate cost of Indian insurance (Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom 2006)?
Thanks
Best regards

Yes a carnet is required, check value with your motoring organisation but it is a high value one from your home country.

No India enforces the 180 days per carnet rule very strictly but Nepal is another matter and something can usually be worked out to allow it to stay there.
Others hopefully will be along to answer your other questions.

1000cc too much for India
A 1000 cc bike is too much for Indian roads . Unless you have unlimited money you be far better off buying an Enfield and selling it when you leave after a few months . Flying a 1000cc bike into those tiny roads is overkill.

There is a famous motorable road you can try. Many people opt for two Wheeler rather than a flight for Srinagar to Leh. It has been outstanding and a different experience alltogether.

I have a friend who came into India with his R100, traveled all round the country, left it in Goa, flew home to make a bit of cash, and returned to continue down to Australia. Not sure how long the bike was left in India, but it was most likely more than 180 days.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
