Itinerary starter ideas for Central Australia
After adding to saliadarunavuelta's thread with some ideas for Central Australia, I got all inspired and nostalgic and put together a map of places we loved on our trip to Central Australia back in 2002. Note it was by 4wd as I had not discovered the joys of bikes , but I can't recall anything that would pose the slightest difficulty to my 1150 GS or other adventure bike.
Note I wouldn't recommend this in (southern hemisphere) summer - its for the middle of the year (local winter).
Hope this is useful for someone... West MacDonnell Ranges - Google Maps
It includes the Western MacDonnell Ranges with lots of stunning Gorges, the Ochre Pits where the aboriginal people "mined" ochre of many different colours for trade across Australia, the amazing Palm Valley, Hermansberg Mission, a meteorite crater, Kings Canyon and, of course, Uluru (Ayer's Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas).
Official info on the West MacDonnell Ranges here.
If you have time, there are of course many other options in the area, including the East MacDonnell Ranges, the Finke Track, Chamber's Pillar and lots more.
