London to Lilongwe
Hi

I'm planning a trip with a friend of mine from the UK to Malawi to deliver a Land Rover to an animal sanctuary in Lilongwe (Don't judge! I love bikes but it's nigh on impossible to get a baboon cage on the back of one )

We are looking to set of at the beginning of Feb 2011, the provisional route is as follows

UK- France-Spain-Morocco-Algeria-Tunisia-Libya-Egypt-Sudan-Ethiopia-Kenya-Tanzania-Malawi.

If anybody has followed any or all of this route or can suggest a viable alternative then I would love to hear from you. Is there an alternative ferry route across the Med and is the road from Egypt to Sudan now open? Also, does anybody have any info about the political situation in Sudan (is it safe to travel, are there any trouble spots that MUST be avoided away from Dufar, etc?)

hi,

Im also heading down from Dublin to Cape Town at the End of Jan 2011.

There's a ferry from Venice to Alexandria (Visemar Line) and a ferry from Palermo to Tunis. We are debating to use one of these.

The road from Egypt down through Sudan is not open as far as I know, and most likely you will have to take the ferry from Aswan to Wadi Halfa.

Just note there is some political stuff going on in Sudan in Jan (something to do with North/South issues) and I believe they will have an election in April.

Libia oficial invitation
We are also planning to do Cape Town to Cape North on May 2012. What we know about Libia is that unless you have an oficial invitation from there, you can't cross the country. We are thinking about going to Port Sudan and from there take a boat to Jordania and from there going North. Does anybody know something about crossing the Red Sea?

I´m far from expert on North Africa, but I´m pretty sure that the border between Morocco and Algeria remains closed, a common topic in many forums actually.

As others have said the Morocco/Algeria border is probably closed but you can get a ferry Marseilles to Tunis then your chosen route from there.
Just a thought, what type of Landrover? something with an old fashioned engine might be best down there, not a td5 or anything with electronic engine management, they can't fix it.
Regarding Libya you need a guide to travel with you, I forget who we used but there will be advice on this elsewhere on this site, also posts about getting your Ethiopian visa in your home country before departure.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
