Map of rideable parts of Africa
Hi there,
thinking about riding through Africa, I gathered the information that I could find about which country you can ride through. Some are just unsafe from a security point of view (red), some force you to take a guide (orange), and finally some land borders (red) are closed, for political reasons.

Some countries are only partially closed; e.g., southern Egypt, Algeria. DRC and Congo are supposed to be quite unsafe, though many people manage to dash through it without problems, to/from Angola, so I assume the western parts are safe.

A picture being like a thousand words, here's the map. Feel free to comment or correct. Maybe it can help newcomers to get a rough idea how to cross north to south (while that's still possible).

Good effort but I think a big caveat needs to be on this.

There is nothing guaranteed to be safe and nothing guaranteed to be safe. Africa is a strange beast and changes daily one person can pass through a location easily and another not.

Are you going to keep this updated. Mali is possibly more dangerous further south than that, Mauri is not the best place to be at the moment after dark and Guinea is probably developing as well.

Best advice is for people to watch the FCO website (of thier country and other countries) and watch the hubb to determine if its safe to travel.

I always thought that was more or less a one off. Considering the amounts of tourists that place recieves.

Hey Laurent

Thanks for the map, it gives a person a better perspective of the situation in mid Africa. Regarding the border between Algeria and Morocco. What is the best/easiest way to cross North Africa from east to west. Must I take a ferry from Tunisia or Algeria to Spain and go to Morocco from there? How does one travel that section?

RasMan: that's how people do it most probably, ferry to and from Spain. You do know that you need a guide in Libya ? and that the area north east of Algeria is not very safe..

zaplaje: yes, you can, but only by ferry, so does it still qualify for "overlanding" ? ;-)

Gosh, I hear from people doing Africa 30 years ago without any of this hassle... Algeria, Niger, Egypt, Tchad, all safe!

Hey Laurent

Thanks for the info. It looks like it will just be a lot easier to take a ferry/boat from Egypt straight to Morocco and continue from there. Any idea on what that would cost, and would it be possible to go straight to Morocco from Egypt, or will I have to go to Spain, get visa and all paperwork just to take a ferry over to Morocco.

I thank you in advance for all the info.

Hmmm, not sure if Algeria's correct is it? I'm looking into doing a N>S shortly, starting in Tunisia, and was under the impression that S Algeria is now fairly OK, and indeed N Niger? But you need a guide pretty much everywhere in Algeria now if with a vehicle. Source Chris Scott's Sahara Overland ~ The book and the website.

Someone let me know if I've got it wrong, please!

There is no problem (other than officialdom in Egypt) to cros from Wadi Halfa, Sudan to Aswan Egypt. It only takes a long 4/5 days to get your vehicles released and much traveling to and fro (20km) between town and port.
