Pacific Northwest To Ushuaia & Return

Two of us are in the early planning stages of a ride down the Pan American Highway, probably late 2010 . Anybody able to give me an idea of how much time we'd need? Would 2-3 months be enough?

We want to smell the roses along the way but my partner has a company to run so can't be gone forever

Thanks

I'm planning a similar trip (Phoenix, To Alaska, To Ushuaia, To Chicago), except I'm heading up to Alaska first. Your route sounds like it will be around 20,000 miles. So do the math. 333 miles a day at 2 months, and 222 miles a day for 3 months. Doesn't seem to allow for much time to smell the roses.

I'm giving myself 6-8 months so I can take my time.

I imagine more people on here will tell you that 2-3 months will be rushing things too much, but maybe it's doable. If you fly back then I could see it working out better.

Of course you're not leaving much time....but I think you already know that.

See the "Cocktails in Vancouver" thread if you happen to be in Vancouver and thirsty tonight.

You could do it in the time frame mentioned but you will regret not making more time. I could not leave for that long so am doing it on the installment plan. Shipped to Santiago Chile then spent six weeks riding to TDF then to NE Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and back to BA where moto sits in storage. I to run a business but now plan on picking up bike in Sept. and taking three months to get home (Washington). Maybe in a few years I will do it right and set out for 3 1/2 years RTW.

Put on your planning sheet to get to exit 71 on I-5 your first day out and I will have a place for you to sleep and pictures of my trip to boar you.

Thanks for your input, it all helps. I'll take these to my partner at our next planning meeting and see if we can't gain a little more time, I'm retired so I have all the time I need. I just need to convince him that his business won't be any different after 5-6 months than it will be after 2-3!

Road Hog, have your turn off marked and will be in touch closer to our departure.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
