Trichelia: I didn't do the piste to Atar. I stuck to the asphalt road. It took me a day to cross the Marocco/mauri border (long story) so I just bee-lined it to Nouakchott.......sorry can't help with Atar road.
I find that the most influencing factors on my fuel consumption are: Load, Speed and Wind. Unfortunately I don't have stats but have experienced a as much as a 40% drop in consumption when speeding (130kph while fully loaded with a strong headwind).....sand is a different animal and I avoid it at all cost.....often unsuccessfully and then I'm so busy watching that both the bike and I don't overheat that I have never actually looked at fuel consumption.......water consumption increases a lot though :-)
My 2 cents on the southern part of your route (main asphalt routes and my info is two years old): Once you hit Namibia you have lots of fuel. Lots of fuel in the Caprivi Strip also. Be careful in Zimbabwe....the fuel stations between Vic falls and Bullawayo ran dry and I almost got stuck. Fuel prices were insane in Vic Falls, and I also had to wait for the fuel truck to deliver to the gas station.......if possible, cross over to Zambia.....lots of fuel in Livingstone. Lots of fuel everywhere in South Africa
