Ride in China
There are several places you can get in to China:
From Pakistan pass the Hongqilapu Custom get in to Xinjiang. That is the famouse route of Marco Polo: Kashi(Kachgar)-Hetian(Khotan)-Yutan(Pein)-Minfeng(Niya)-Qiemo(Ciarcian)-pass the desert of Lop-Tulufan-Hami(Camul)-Dunhuang(Suctur)-zhangye(Campicion)-Xi'an-Taiyuan(Tainfu)-Beijing(Cambaluc)-Tianjin port
You can delivery your bike at Tianjin port.
There are two names for one place or city, first one is the name of today, the other one is the name in the book of Marco Polo.
From Niple pass the Freindship Bridge Custom.
The suggestion route is that : Lazi-Rikaze-Lasa-Linzhi-Mangkang-(Shangeri-la,where were discribed in the noval of "Horizonte desaparacido" By James Hilton )-Lijiang-Dali-Kunming-Guizhou-guilin-Wuzhou-Shenzhen-Hongkong
You also can get in China from Beijing, and delivery the bike by ship to Tianjin port.
Yes, it is not easy to do the documents work, but now, we can make all the document work for riders who want to ride their own motorcycles or drive their own cars.
You can contact gene_jerry@sohu.com for more if you are interest in it.

G'Day,
cost per rider/bike for your proposed "Marco Polo" trip?
what kind of service your offering? guide? back-up vehicle? accomodation?
how many PRC motorcycle tours have you organised so far?
have you been to this mention places yourself?
what kinds of PRC documents you claim to be able to arrange?
best regards,
BUTCH

Hi Butch,
Cost for a (obligatory guide) will be around 100 USD p/day.
Permits, if crossing more then 2 provinces, must be endorsed by Bejing... this could take 6 month,s.
For the rst it,s not that complicated... You just need to pay, and to take time for the paperwork.
You could also enter on any international land-border-crossing. (like Karakoram Highway from pakistan)
Last year we examined this posibility to go around Myanmar.. But it was to costly (even as a group)

@Maarten
i am fully aware of the PRC biking situation, living here since 1989 and riding bikes since day one. we do not need endorsed permits to travel.
its just once in a while people advertise China rides, China events, China tours but afterwards the whole thing fades away, no interest from people or too much hassle with the "red tape", too expensive,etc...
or the advertiser is not able to put the whole tour together due to restrictions, paper work.
regards,
BUTCH

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
