Route Suggestion - Ixtapa Heading North
Can anyone suggest a route north from Ixtapta to Copper Canyon?
Riding routes around or south of Ixapta?
Also, heading north from Copper Canyon back to the U.S., is the Baja a better route?
I'm headed south on the Baja, but is that the beet (scenic) route north again. Headed back to B.C from there.
Riding a GS1150
Thanks

Ixtapa heading north
If you are still in BAja then I assume you will be taking the ferry to Mazatlan and then down the coast to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo .Great route!
If you want to head north from Zihuatanejo you have a choice of going back west up the coast on Mex 200 to Lazaro Cardenas/la Mira and taking Mex 37 north to Uruapan and into the Bajio with its multitude of route choices north to Zacatecas.Mex 37 is a great route into the temperate highland interior.
A second choice , and longer would be to go 15km north of Ixtapa on Mex 200 then turn inland on Mex 134 which goes northeast to Cd.Altamirano , then take Mex51 nort to Zitacuaro on Mex 15 ,in the south edge of the Bajio , then go west to
Morelia , North to Irapuato,Leon, Aguascalientes to Zacatecas .
From ZAC/ZAC you can either take Mex 45 north to Durango,DGO and Hidalgo del Parral or Mex49 north past Torreon/Gomez Palacio to Jimenez and from there west to Hgo.del Parral . From there it is a question of taking Mex 24 west to the turnoff north onto Mex23 to Balleza ,Guachochi and you are IN the Copper Canyon country , then north to Creel .
All these roads are wonderful for the most part, been there done them.
As it is now past mid October be ready for some brisk to downright cold weather in the northern high country. It does snow there during winter, you know. The high country in the west of Chihuahua and Sonora and Durango can get severe snow dumps from late November into March .If you wind up in te region during that period be ready to hasten to lower ground if the weather systems move in offf the North Pacific

Thanks for the info.
I should have mentioned I'm not going until mid Feb - I'm still on the wet coast of BC.
Thanks for the heads up on the snow. Didn't know that.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
