Rwanda/ Uganda Gorillas
Hi
Has anyone got any advice regarding Gorilla trekking? I've seen that costs have increased by $250 in Rwanda so we're thinking Bwindi Impenetrable Park may be the way to go.
Does anyone know of any good local agents to arrange permits and do we really need to book 6 months in advance?
Any advice, greatly appreciated.
cheers

We did the gorilla trek in Mgahinga NP in April 2011, in the SW corner of Uganda. A very pretty NP with other activities as well. Went to the NP office in Kisoro to book the day before, and were told to buy the permits at the NP entrance. Judging by the permits book at the reception, it doesn't seem to get crowded out. There was one habituated group of 9 individuals incl 2 silverbacks when we were there which took about 1 1/2 hours to find which seems about the average. Given that this is where the 3 countries meet, worth checking beforehand that the gorillas haven't crossed into Rwanda/Congo.

Bwindi
The cost is $500 & Bwindi is a great spot to see them, you can get a 2 night 3 day tour from Kampala. Bwindi is really beautiful & stay at the Govn't Accomodation some Gorillas come thru the place & the tented accomodation is on a mountain side with stunning views. Walk thru the liitle village of Bwindi and the orphans will put a concert on for you & they are very good.
Contact Jon Blanc at Kabiza - Out of Africa - Too he will arrange it for you & have a look at that web site. Rwanda is also good you seem to walk a little further & I don't think it was as scenic as bwindi. If in Rwanda (Kigali) stay at Step Down Hotel. John is a fantastic bloke.
If you need anymore info let me know. My web site as some photos that I had taken of the Gorillas & it is a fantastic experience & well worth the money. If time is on your side go to Lake Bunyoni & do a trip to see the Batwa Pygmies there singing is sensational.
Cheers
Paul

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
