Sudan Visa
Hi everyone
I am having a nightmare with the Sudan embassy, I want to ride from London to Cape Town through the Middle East, the Sudan embassy takes 2 - 3 months to give a visa but this then only lasts for 2 months after issue date. This obviously plays havoc with me handing notices in at work etc.
What I want to know is it possible to go round Sudan, boat from Egypt or Saudi Arabia I have heard that Saudi do not allocate transit visas to motorbikes, I know there is a boat.
Any help greatly received.

There is a very busy ferry between Duba in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. I saw numerous Egyptian ex-pats queuing for it when I went through on my bike, 2 years ago.
There is also a German HU regular, currently in Abu Dhabi with his bike, who got a Saudi transit visa in Damascus and he's waiting for a new one to re-enter and head for Sudan. I'm sure he can add more 1st-hand detail.
So, it is possible to get transit visas for a bike. You might have to be persistent though.
Best of luck.
Stephan

Cairo
Hi, you can get your visa in Cairo, takes between 2 days & a week depending on whether they like the cut of your jib. They didn't like ours, but we took advantage of the delay to do some snorkelling in Ras Mohammed National Park on the Sinai.

Historically Cairo has been the easiest place to get a Sudanese visa. Rather than going around Sudan, which most overlanders (myself included) rate as one of their favourite parts of Africa, I would be inclined to try for the visa in Cairo, rather than getting it before you leave.
It may help if you arrange a letter of invitation before, just in case this is demanded by the embassy. Midhat Mihir and his brothers should be able to sort you out with an invitation letter - their details are posted separately on the HUBB.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
