Tiger Tracks - Europe (non eu)


The route from Calais through Switzerland, Italy and even into Croatia is fairly uncomplicated. (Boy are those Swiss hotels a bit pricy) I intend to plod through to Switzerland in two days which is only an average of 250 or so miles each day. I won’t be staying too long in this area as my budget won’t include too many £100.00 per night Hotels and camping is not an option as I am already two up on a loaded bike full of clothes and basically don’t want to camp.

Looking at the map I think by aiming for “Faulensee” on the lake I would be in a good spot for a day’s ride via the “Susten Pass” to reach St Moritz in a steady day. Again, purely looking at the map and pointing fingers, the Stelvio is just there and looks like a day’s ride to leave St Moritz via the Stelvio before heading toward the Dolomites.

The only destination I have in mind following the Dolomites is Piltvice in Croatia were I intend to spend a day exploring before heading to Trogir to stay with a fellow motorcyclist. I will stay n Trogir maybe 2 days to visit the Town, Coast and chill out a little. That’s when the unknown element of the trip starts.

If anyone has read my other posts regarding insurance you know I have had some small set-backs. I intend to have a green card for most countries to avoid delays at the border, I also understand that some border do not sell green cards. At this time it looks as if I will have a green card for everywhere in the Balkans except Montenegro.

The obvious border crossing choice to Mostar from Trogir is on the E73, it looks minor and I am presuming with a green card I will have no problems here?
I want to visit Mostar and Sarajevo having just a few days to spend there to experience the contrast between the modern towns and the ramshackle villages.

Leaving Bosnia I would be heading to Montenegro (Without A Green Card) The border I want to take is located east of “Foca” and takes me to “Zabljak” if anyone can advise me on this border and if I can buy a green card or need to divert I would be grateful.

Going into Albania I will be heading to the coast road and will have a green card, I see there are two possible crossings here , one just off Podgorica north of the lake and one on the coast road itself. Can I take either of these crossings or is one easier / straight forward in comparison? In Albania I will head for the Tirane area as I have an unexplainable urge to explore Tirane on foot for a day.

Entering Macedonia i will go to Ohrid and again will have a green card. There are also two ways in here, one either side of the lake. Is there a best choice? Once in Macedonia I have a contact there who is going to give me the "Maximum Macedonia Motorcycle Tour" Looking forward to whatever that is



Macedonia to Serbia is on the main road and although I should have a green card I am told I may be asked to pay anyway. Once in Serbia I will skirt around Kosovo and then get off the highway working my way north along the east side of the country.

That’s about all I can think of for now, I am always grateful for suggestions on places to visit and borders to cross.

I think it will be much cheaper for you if you get green card at your insurance company, than buying one on the border crossing, because you will need it for Albania, Macedonia and Serbia as well.

Regarding recommendation which road to take from Podgorica to Albania depends on what kind of motorcycle you will be driving (as some routes are better and some are in not so good condition).

My green Card does not include montenegro. I have the other countries listed on it but not Montenegro. I dont know why but this is the way of things. I have certainly tried to get insurance

I will be riding a Tiger 955 and it is ok with some rough roads and gravel but is all but useless in mud, sand etc.

I will email you regarding Montenegro, basically i was thinking of spending one day and one night around Zabljak. Then heading across to Podgorica or somewhere near a border crossing the next day and staying one night there.
