Travel to Poland from the UK

Planning a trip to Poland next April and would like some advice on places to stay in Poland with secure bike parking, looking to visit Auschwitz and the salt mines so somewhere local to that would be good, maybe Krakow?

Also interested in any routes or other place to visit along the way.

Directly opposite the visiter's car park / main entrance at Auschwitz there's a hotel that has a large garage. It's not really intended for parking, but they offered to lock my bike there! Also, in Krakow I stayed at a hotel connected to a gym. Although there wasn't any locked parking, the gym was down a walk way well off the Main Street, and was quiet secluded. It was a really nice place to stay - the sauna was complimentary! I can't, off the top of my head, remember the names of either, but I could probably find out if you're interested?

If you're travelling through Czech Republic and have already been to Prague I highly suggest staying in Hradec Králové for a day or two. Lovely place with a real charm to it.

In Oswiecim - the polish name of Auswitch I stayed at a Guesthouse/B&B called "Villa Green" which I can highly recomnend. Its just 500 meters from the town centre and another 3-4 km away from the old concentration camps site 1.

Villa Green is an old villa rebuild and redecorated to a nice and modern B&B. Very helpful owner, secure parking lot in the backyard. Only 20-25 € a night.

I've visited Poland on numerous occasions, riding my ST 1100. I never made advance arrangements for accommodation... I just rode until I was tired of riding that day, then looked around for a place to stay.

Just about every hotel or pension will be able to offer you secure parking of some kind. This might be an enclosed garage, or it might be simply putting the bike 'around back' in an enclosed area of the property.

Unless you have some kind of extraordinarily valuable motorcycle (like a Harley-Davidson with all sorts of baubles on it), the above precautions should be sufficient.

For peace of mind, you could consider buying a good quality padlock and a chain or cable (Kryptonite makes some good cables) that would enable you to secure the bike to a post or tree.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
