I've done this run a few times, having lived in Switz for a while. The run down (via Troyes or Metz) to the Basel end is best done in my view on the French side, the autobahn is fast, but there's lots of traffic between Strasbourg /Freibourg /Basel. Take the French dual carriageway instead (nicer to look at too.) From Basel I personally would ride the mway thru to Zurich then Chur, head for San Bernardino, but turn off early to hit the 'Splugapass' over to Italia. This is a top road, and will bring you out by Chiavenna in the lakes around the north of Bergamot. Ignore all Italian mways and head south via back roads. less traffic, more scenic and marginally less hair-raising. You could spend a month just blatting around the mountains on the CH/I border!
