UK to Greece

I am planning to travel to Greece from the UK next year. The ferries from Italy seem to cost a fortune.Any ideas which is the best overland route through former Yugoslavia.

G'day mate,

and welcome to the HUBB :-)

The ferry from Venice to Igoumenitsa costs 150 Euros one-way for 1 person + bike (off season). When buying the ticket in Igoumenitsa the travel agencies sometimes organise it for 100 Euros one-way. So I'd suggest to ride down to GR and return via ferry. Saves lots of time and fuel.

A very beautiful trip is along the coastal road through Croatia, Montenegro, Albania. Very scenic and lots of campsites. Albania is very cheap compared to central Europe, so there I'd take a room for the night. The main road along the albanian coast is mostly good tarmac. In the south from about Vlore it splits, the easterly route being good tarmac, the coastal route, although very beautiful, is pretty rough due to construction sites.

Hi, i met a local in Albania this summer who told me that the cheapest crossing to Italy from the Balkans is from Albania.
i always prefer a round trip and would travel down through Italy and back via the Balkans not forgetting to visit the Alps and dolomites. Albania and Motenegro were easily the cheapest places. Campsites along the Adriatic are plentiful. Andy
p.s you will need a Green Card for the Balkans

I used the ferry from Igoumenitsa to Ancona last year. I rode into Igoumenitsa and went into the last travel agent ton the left, just before you get into the port. It was about 16:00 and I managed to get an overnight cabin and it cost around 100 euro's.

Then I settled down to watch the Greek Police bring in 20 or so illegals, all cable tied together!

The ferry doesn't leave till late, around 22:00, so you not only save a days ride (and fuel) but also a night accomodation in Italy.

The road from Igoumenitsa to Thressaloniki is a great ride, if a little 'spirited'....

If you choose the Albainian route, make sure you've got all the right documents.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
