UK to Mongolia
Hi all,
Thinking of travelling to Mongolia in May 2021 in our land rover.
Is it possible to do a round trip in 3 months?
Is it possible to plan everything in 17 months?
Any advise will be gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance.

As I'm going that way next year,I've been throlling through various forms the world over so I'm doing my own research too.Not sure what route your taking but as you probably already know, there are a few options. The long route via Turkey,Iran and the Stans,a lot more scenic which is sure to include serious highlights, the negatives..... crap that's going to slow you down, the Visas, numerous border crossings, possible bureaucracy, indirect route,Carnet for the Jeep. One thing to consider if your British is the Iranian visa, getting guides etc.....and the possibility of getting your Turkmenistan visa rejected which is a lucky dip.I think 3 months might be slightly fast paced,do-able but will you enjoy it?Then theres the direct route via Ukraine straight into Russia and drop down to Mongolia, certainly cheaper, less administration and no need for a Carnet. If it's only Mongolia you want to see that is the route to take and 3 months is more then enough time I would think.

Yes, and yes. If you head along the Trans Siberian Highway you'll easily do it, but it's a long road and if you don't schedule some stops you'll find it an extremely boring one.
The journey I am planning starting May 2020 will take me along the TSH to Ulan-Ude then Mongolia, turning round to head home through the Stans and the Pamir. I'm not going to be in any particular hurry and will be stopping plenty along the way to see the sights and meet the people. Preliminary planning to date puts it more or less spot on 5 months.

Ryderpaul, I am thinking of a similar trip but on 2 wheels. Are you planning on driving back too? If so, which route? And have you researched Russian visa stuff at all?
Also, where does one get a Carnet from in the UK nowadays?
Cheers

The official FIA carnet supplier for the UK is: https://www.carseurope.net/
You may also be able to get one from ADAC, the German AA.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
