US tour from Russia, please help!
Hi all!
My wife and I are planning a 2-3 week tour in the US either in August or September. THe plan is to meet up with another couple in Chicago and drive down to LA and back. WIth this regard, could anyone advise us on an approximate route to take? What we are looking for is great scenery and variety along the road - not boring flatlands for several days. We have never been to the US and honestly dont have a clue regarding where to go and what to see. Our friends in Chicago havent done a lot of travelling around the US either.
Any comments would be most welcome, as well as tips, maps, routes, etc.
Feel free to email them to duhud@hotmail.com
THANKS!!!!
Best regards,
Dragon Spirit

Unfortunately, Chicago to LA will involve some long boring stretches through the great plains.
Also, 2-3 weeks is very fast to do this round trip, as it will be close to 1 week each way non-stop driving, of which 4-5 days will be through the prairies.
Consider as an alternative going south from Chicago then east - Louisiana (New Orleans), Florida (Miami, Disneyworld, the Keys, Cape Kennedy space centre), east coast (Kentucky, South Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, New York, New England and back to Chicago, perhaps via Canada and Niagara Falls / Toronto. That will easily fill up 3 weeks, in fact it will be ambitious, but you will get lots of variety.
I would suggest early September if you have a choice of timing. See also Greg Frazier's book on 10 best roads in US for motorcycle touring- http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/gre...r/usaroads.htm
Good luck

In my opinion, the best scenic ride between Chicago and LA is through Colorado and Utah. Not to be missed is Utah Highway 12 from the town of Torrey near Capitol Reef National Park, south through the towns of Boulder and Escalante. It is exceptionally beautiful scenery as well as a fun ride. Continue toward Zion National Park and you will have ridden through some of the best of the American West.
Have fun!
