Much of the Sahara is a barren rocky desert referred to as hamada, rather than the ergs (dune seas) that you expect. You will see large areas of hamada in many places in southern Morocco, so there's no need to travel all the way to Western Sahara. The desolate road from Goulimine to Tan Tan is a good example.
If you want ergs, there's a dune system near Merzouga and a smaller one at M'hamid south of Zagora.
