Hi all I am in Malaysia on a British reg bike and so far have not been able to purchase insurance ( third party) here at all. At the border with Thailand I spent a day looking for someone who would cover me for my two month stay but apparently insurers at the border will only deal with Thai plated vehicles now and nothing as " exotic" as something from Europe.
Of course no insurance does not leave me feeling comfortable.

Does anyone know of an insurer that will handle foreign non Thai registered bikes in Malaysia?

Which border did you come through?

If you came from Hat Yai in Thailand and into Malaysia at AH2 it should definetively be possible to purchase insurance at the border. Its on the right hand side right after the entry point to Malaysia.

I had exactly the same problem as you, I came through at a samll bordercrossing from the Satun province of Thailand and when I asked for insurance at the border at was told it was not open or not possible or something like that and that I could get it in any bank in any town/city in Malaysia (which was pure nonsense BTW)
So I rode into Malaysia and tried to find insurance there, asked a lot of places, I sent mails, I went to insurance offices by myself and told then my wish, I made telephone calls - but to no use. In the end I choose to ride back to the main border crossing to get an insurance there - something I barly was able to.

I had a thread about it earlier on in this section but I cannot dind it for the moment.
So if you came through one of the minor crossings it should be possible if you go back to the main one like I did...

I came through a minor border went back to a major one (Pedang Besar), spent a day in 5 deferent offices, result:

Bike too big, only Thai registration, cannot help.

Hmm - thats a bummer! Maybe they have changed theyre rules?

I could LINE the girl at Sadao, but its a bit of a waste of time, now.

Zurich at Sadao would have been the safest bet as you know.

The guy not only hasn't / didn't have insurance - he also had no ICP.

Shouldn't be an issue in Malaysia (however I have friends living here who've brought their bikes in years ago and never bothered getting them registered, let alone insured)

I you see the two first posts in this thread you will see its quite an issue to get insurance for a european plated bike in Malaysia. I emailed, phoned and personally went to several offices of all the recommended insurance companies in Malaysia but not a chance in the world. As I came through a small border crossing from Satun province in Thailand with no insurance possibility at the border I had - after a week of intensive hunt for insurance in KL and Penang - to go back to the main bordercrossing between Thai and Malay and I could barely get it there. As of May 2015. And as stated from TS it seems its not even possible there nowadays either.

Just checked with a local insurance agent I know here. He said that the only place to get insurance for foreign registered bikes would be at the border. And from the experiences below, I guess the safe bet would be the main borders rather than the smaller ones.

Don't know if this will help now but my wife's family lives in Malaysia , my brotherinlaw told me even for them ,insurance is just a technicality, his friend was in a wreck a year previous n the insurance company told him that they could not proceed as the police report had not yet been filed?

No, insurance isn't a just technicality in Malaysia.

When entering Malaysia or Laos (prolly Thailand too), you need some kind of 3rd party insurance, in the event of an accident, its not going to help you much, but it might save your ass from going to prison.

I don't know if you have ever ridden there, but you need something called an ICP, which is like a permit issued by the JPJ (the DMV of MY) and as is the way in Asia, they set up road blocks to catch not only non-domestic vehicles but locals too. Non production of a IDP will get your bike confiscated, or at the very least cause you a great deal of inconvenience by riding back to the border and sorting yourself out.

The insurance is not expensive, like $20 for a month, maybe $30 for 3 months. The rain keeps on threatening to stop and its my time to ride in Northern Malaysia, and I will quiz the insurance girl at the border about this issue of european bike when I cross next, but I'm sure its just a misunderstanding and that its still possible.

OK! .. I went down to Padang this morning, all is pretty chilled, but i didn't have time to ride around Padang searching for insurance.

However, something else came up today and I had a need to contact Zurich insurance at Sadao, and I was passed the new number.

Yes, they still do insurance for foreign bikes to enter MY. They also do insurance for SG & MY bikes entering Thailand too, which i didn't know.

I also found out they are open from 8.00 am - 8.00 pm - Malay time zone.

ETS: Again, you will need some kind of English translation of your registration document, if I was on a foreign bike, they want to know the owner, cc, model, make, colour - and they want to see some kind of rubber stamp on it.

If it was me, i would do it myself, my Thai one is a very basic translation, typed on an A4 sheet by the local licensing authority, but it also has a little crest at the top and a big rubber stamp at the bottom.

The girls at Zurich, can process all your paperwork and obtain the ICP - all ahead of time - but for a fee. When Snakeboy came through, they helped him, but now they are charging a high price for the service. A colleague went to Cameron Highlands the other month, he wasn't in possession of any documents, just a photocopy of his Thai green book, he shouldn't have been allowed to take the bike out - as it was on finance - but we arranged for him to send the girls a copy of the document via LINE, and when he rocked up at 8.00 am, all his documents and ICP were sitting there in an envelope, he said it was one of the best 1000THB he had ever spent.

All done in 30 minutes. Third party only for a year. Should satisfy the cops.
